A Stretcher Party, Netley Hospital

Photograph of a stretcher party on parade in Netley Military Hospital, Southampton, with their commander. Netley Hospital was also known as the Royal Victoria Military Hospital, built after the Crimean War on Queen Vistoria's orders that army nurses and doctors should be trained to return men to active duty. Southampton was chosen on account of its status as a safe place to dock and disembark casualties. Photograph by Gale & Polden Ltd., who published the card in the Wellington Series. Gale & Polden were famous for their military themed postcards. Message on reverse (ink) reads: 'I may be home in another fornight (sic) or three weeks. This is the front part of the Hospital.'
